Supporting Your Research

The COEHS’ pre-award research specialists are here to assist faculty and staff in seeking external funding for research, education and training, and other services. We support the COEHS community in proposal development through high-quality services and professional partnerships with Principal Investigators (PIs). We work collaboratively with PIs to prepare grant applications, provide services and support in matters related to the COEHS, University and sponsor policies regarding proposal development and submission.

We provide the following services to COEHS faculty and researchers:

  • Assist in finding suitable sponsors for projects including federal, state and foundation
  • Support ideation and scope of work development and planning
  • Review sponsor guidelines, identify key requirements
  • Develop timelines
  • Assist with budget preparation, budget documentation, and submission forms
  • Collaborate with partner institutions to secure all subcontract documentation
  • Edit narratives and project descriptions
  • Support securing necessary approvals such as Mandatory Cost Share, Course Buyouts, etc.
  • Assist in obtaining data sharing agreements, tissue/specimen sharing agreements, contracts, and other procedures needing approval through UNM’s Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP)

For proposal development support and all actions that require approval from the Office of Sponsored projects ( for example, data sharing agreements or contracts) please complete an Early Alert.

Proposal Process Steps

  1. Talk with your chair or supervisor regarding your intentions to seek external funding to support your work. Be sure to discuss any fiscal or workload implications such as mandatory cost share, course reassignments, course buyouts, summer salary, etc.
  2. Submit an Early Alert (for all roles such as PI, co-PI or key personnel) and a meeting with the pre-awards team will be scheduled
  3. Meet with the Research Support Team pre-award team
  4. Generate the Streamlyne record to receive OSP approval (done by the research support team)
  5. Proposal is submitted (by OSP after final PI approval)
